ExxonMobil Unveils Licensing Deal to Globalize Its Proprietary Rebar Processing Technology

Nov 06, 2024

On November 1, 2024, ExxonMobil announced a significant strategic licensing agreement with Neuvokas Corporation, the producer of GatorBar®, a leading glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) composite rebar. This collaboration represents a pivotal step in expanding the global composite rebar market, particularly within the concrete reinforcement sector. Under the terms of the agreement, ExxonMobil has secured exclusive rights to sub-license Neuvokas’ proprietary manufacturing process in regions outside of North America, enabling them to bring this innovative technology to a wider audience.

The partnership between ExxonMobil and Neuvokas combines the strengths of both companies, particularly in manufacturing efficiency and product performance. ExxonMobil’s Proxxima™ system, recognized for its ultra-low viscosity and snap cure technology, pairs seamlessly with Neuvokas' advanced processes. This collaboration allows for production speeds that can reach up to 20 times faster than traditional composite rebar methods, thereby significantly enhancing operational efficiency. This remarkable speed not only streamlines production but also contributes to GatorBar® being one of the most competitively priced alternatives to conventional steel rebar.

GatorBar® is designed with several key advantages that further distinguish it from traditional steel rebar. One of its most significant features is its corrosion resistance, which enhances the durability and lifespan of structures that utilize it. Additionally, GatorBar® is lightweight, making it easier to handle and transport compared to its steel counterparts. This weight reduction not only lowers transportation costs but also simplifies the installation process on job sites. Furthermore, GatorBar® incorporates new Grip technology, which effectively eliminates slivers that are often a drawback of other GFRP products. This innovative feature enhances the overall usability and safety of the material during installation.

The benefits of GatorBar® extend beyond performance metrics; its application can lead to potential design optimizations that contribute to more efficient construction practices. These characteristics make GatorBar® an appealing choice for a broad spectrum of projects, from large infrastructure developments to smaller construction endeavors.

The collaboration between ExxonMobil and Neuvokas underscores both companies’ commitment to fostering technological innovation within the construction industry. By integrating advanced materials and manufacturing techniques, they aim to provide cost-effective solutions that not only meet the demands of modern construction but also enhance sustainability practices. As the industry increasingly seeks to reduce its environmental footprint, the development and deployment of innovative materials like GatorBar® will play a crucial role in transforming construction methodologies worldwide.

Neuvokas, located in Ahmeek, Michigan, is the owner of the GatorBar® technology. The manufacturing processes, custom production lines, control systems, and technologies for GatorBar® were developed and built from the ground up, resulting in several patented innovations.
